"Took the combo tour for Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon. It makes for a pretty long 8-hour day, but it's totally worth it if you are short on time in Vegas. The petroglyphs at Atlatl Rock blew my mind. The van had good AC and plenty of water."

"We booked the ATV tour and it was insanely fun! The guides made sure everyone felt safe before we hit the trails. Riding through the deep red sand dunes was a blast, and they stopped at great spots for photos. Just remember to bring your driver's license if you want to drive."

"Perfect small group tour. There were only 10 of us, which made getting on and off the bus really fast. We stopped at the new visitor center which was actually super impressive. They provided all the snacks and water we needed. Much better than trying to rent a car and drive out there with no cell service."

"Brilliant half-day trip to escape the madness of the Strip. Our guide picked us up right on time from the Bellagio underground area. The contrast of the red Aztec sandstone against the blue sky is unreal. The short hike to the Fire Wave was the absolute highlight of the day."

"Did the sunset tour since we knew the summer heat would be brutal. Starting at 4 PM was a smart move. Even though some trails like White Domes were closed for the season, seeing the rocks glow at golden hour near Rainbow Vista made up for it. Highly recommend for photographers."

"A really solid guided hike. We chose the moderate difficulty level and our guide was super knowledgeable about the Mojave ecosystem. We spent a good amount of time at Elephant Rock. It was a bit chilly in February, so definitely bring layers if you go in the winter!"

Things to Know Before Booking

Planning your Valley of Fire excursion is straightforward, but there are a few important logistics and seasonal restrictions you need to know before you book.

Tour Types Available

You can choose from relaxed sightseeing bus tours, guided hiking excursions tailored to different fitness levels, thrilling ATV/UTV off-road adventures, and sunset photography tours. There are also full-day combo tours that include nearby Red Rock Canyon.

Hotel Pick-ups

Most guided tours include convenient pick-up and drop-off from major hotels on the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas. Note that tour operators generally do not offer pick-ups from off-Strip hotels or Airbnbs.

Entrance Fees Included

The standard $10 to $15 state park entrance fee is typically included in the price of guided tours. If you are booking a private vehicle or driving yourself, you will need to pay this fee at the entrance booth.

Seasonal Trail Closures

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of this, popular trails like the Fire Wave, White Domes, and Seven Wonders Loop are closed to all visitors from May 15 through October 1 to prevent heat-related emergencies.

Age and Safety Rules

If you are booking an ATV or UTV tour, drivers must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver's license. For bus and van tours, Nevada state law requires children under 6 to use a booster seat, which you may need to provide yourself.

What to Wear

The terrain consists of loose sand and uneven sandstone. Closed-toe hiking shoes are required for most tours. You should also bring a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen to protect against the intense Mojave Desert sun.

Cancellation Policies

The majority of tour operators offer a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. However, some highly discounted or private tours may have all-sales-final policies, so check the specific tour details.

Plan Your Visit to Valley of Fire

Valley of Fire State Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year. Unless you are a registered camper at one of the overnight sites, you must exit the park by sunset.

The newly renovated Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The main park office operates Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but is closed on state holidays.

Important Note: The park implements a strict annual maintenance closure from December 1 through December 14. During these two weeks, the park is completely closed to all visitors, including those entering on foot.

The park is located approximately 50 miles northeast of the Las Vegas Strip, which takes about an hour to drive. The most direct route is to take Interstate 15 North for 35 to 40 miles to Exit 75, then head east on Valley of Fire Highway for 17 miles to the West Entrance.

Warning: Do not use rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft to get to the park. Cell phone service is virtually nonexistent in the area, meaning you will likely get stranded and be unable to request a return ride to Las Vegas.

If you prefer not to drive, booking a guided tour with round-trip transportation from your Las Vegas hotel is the most reliable and stress-free option.

The ideal time to visit is between October and April. During these fall, winter, and spring months, temperatures are mild and comfortable, ranging from freezing in the early mornings to around 75 degrees Fahrenheit in the afternoons. The softer lighting during these months is also perfect for photography.

The worst time to visit is from May through September. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit and can surpass 120 degrees. Due to the extreme risk of heat exhaustion, many of the park's most popular trails—including the Fire Wave and White Domes—are completely closed starting May 15.

Valley of Fire accommodates visitors with physical limitations, though the natural terrain presents some challenges. Accessible restrooms and shaded picnic areas are available at Atlatl Rock, Seven Sisters, the Cabins, and White Domes.

Elderly visitors or those with limited mobility can enjoy spectacular views directly from the paved scenic drives, which feature numerous pullouts. Short, flat walks like the 0.1-mile path to Balancing Rock are highly manageable.

Wheelchair users should note that most hiking trails consist of loose sand or uneven sandstone, which will require specialized equipment or physical assistance to navigate.

The park recently opened a $30+ million Visitor Center featuring comprehensive interpretive displays, a 10-minute orientation film narrated by William Shatner, and a gift shop selling souvenirs and books.

  • Food and Drink: There are no restaurants or grocery stores inside the park. The Visitor Center has very limited snack options, so you must pack your own lunch and plenty of water.
  • Camping: There are two campgrounds offering a total of 73 sites, some with RV power and water hookups. Reservations must be made up to 11 months in advance via the Nevada State Parks website.
  • Connectivity: Cell service is extremely poor. Paid WiFi is available at the Visitor Center and Atlatl Rock Campground.

To protect the fragile 150-million-year-old sandstone and ancient artifacts, Valley of Fire strictly enforces park rules. Violators face heavy fines.

  • Drones: Strictly prohibited. You cannot fly drones anywhere in the park unless you have an approved commercial photography permit secured 30 days in advance.
  • Climbing: Rock climbing is allowed in general areas, but it is strictly banned on Arch Rock, Elephant Rock, and Atlatl Rock to preserve these delicate formations.
  • Pets: Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet at all times. Pets are not allowed inside the Visitor Center.
  • Prohibited Items: Metal detectors, fireworks, smoke bombs, and any tools used for carving rocks are completely banned.

Do I need to bring my own water and food on the tour?

Guided tours typically provide bottled water and light snacks, and some full-day or ATV tours include lunch. However, since there are no restaurants in the park and the desert heat is intense, it is highly recommended to bring extra water and your own snacks.
